Butter village of Balk

The little river of Luts, famous for the Elfstedentocht, flows through the centre of Balk. This makes Balk a lively water sports location, with its fun waterside cafés, shops and passing boats. In the 18th century, this village was known for its butter trade throughout the Zuidwesthoek, an area in the south-western part of Friesland. The historic village centre, with monumental buildings close to Slotermeer lake, has been designated a protected heritage village.

THE LUTS

The Luts (sometimes also called the Lits) is an important part of the Elfstedentocht. In summer months however, it's a beautiful sailing area. The river runs from Slotermeer lake to Balk and on to the Holken, which in turn is part of the Heegermeer and Fluessen lakes. When sailing on the Luts, you'll pass not only the city of Sloten but also some amazing countryside. On the last Thursday of August, the traditional Gondelvaart regatta is held in Balk. Around the Luts in the centre, it's party time thanks to the numerous oompah bands.
