Heeg (or Heech as we say here in Friesland) is the Eldorado for water sports fans. This bustling village is regularly the backcloth for large and small events alike. Heechspanning interactive street theatre on Ascension Day is famous locally, but you certainly also won't want to miss the Heechersimmerfestival (summer festival). For a bite to eat or drink, head for one of the many waterside cafés in the friendly and cosy centre. THE POOLS ROUTE

As a sailing guest, simply enjoy a unique stretch of unspoiled countryside. The Poelen area between the water sports villages of Heeg, Gastmeer and Oudega (SFW) is a series of fens, narrow ditches and babbling streams amidst dense reed lands. The most important attractions of this area are nature, tranquillity and silence. The sailing route with small tunnels and passageways takes you past smallholdings, a belfry and a birdwatching hut, from which the rich local bird life can be observed.

    Het skûtsje van Heeg die tegen de wind in vaart waardoor het skûtsje scheef begin te varen.

    Korneliske Ykes II is a reconstruction of an old eel fishing barge, built using traditional construction methods and materials. KYII tells the story of the former eel trade and transport of live eels by sea from Heeg and the surrounding area, mainly to London.

    Famous in Heeg on Ascension Day: the Heechspanning street festival. Heechspanning is free for all and the village centre is the party location with various stages. Once again this year, the village will be turned upside down with street music, dance and theatre performances.
