  • UNESCO world heritage: Wouda pumping station

    When arriving at Lemmer, you cannot miss it: a 60-metre-high chimney of one of the Netherlands' most beautiful and innovative monuments: UNESCO World Heritage Ir. D.F. Wouda pumping station. Since 1920, this pumping station has been discharging excess water from the Frisian basin waters at times of high water levels.

Cities and villages

Southwest Friesland is home to no less than 140 villages and 7 of the famous eleven Frisian cities. Each of the Waterland cities has its own charm. Here, you'll find tell-tale signs of the rich trading past and maritime history. In 2018, we even created a new Elfstedentocht.   • The Afsluitdijk

    The completion of the Afsluitdijk in 1932 was a game changer for Waterland van Friesland. While we were protected against the sea, the fishing industry was almost annihilated. At the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center in Kornwerderzand, you can discover the stories of Dutch Delta Design, UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, the fish migration river and the new, future-proof Afsluitdijk and IJsselmeer lake.
