“Wyldemerk is a quiet area nowadays, but it used to be a lot more hectic when it was the Wilde Markt (wild market), with horse racing, funfairs and trading markets. The sandy excavations have since formed a maze of pools and fens, home to no less than 25 different species of dragonflies.”
Gaasterland feels like a totally different Waterland van Friesland. Standing on one of the three ridges along the IJsselmeer lake, you'll have beautiful panoramic views all the way to the horizon. And in the age-old woodlands, it's nice and 'smout', sheltered from the wind, as we would say. Thanks to the rolling hills, you'd almost forget you're in Friesland. Why not have a wander around the famous Rijsterbos woods or visit the Mirnser Klif? Gaasterland can be explored on foot, by bike, by boat or even on horseback.

Cliffs of Gaasterland
There's a little corner of England in Friesland, on the IJsselmeer shores in Gaasterland. Small they may be, but there are three perfectly formed little cliffs. From here, you'll have magnificent views of the birds and kitesurfers soaring through the air.
