The Nannewiid, along with the Douwe Pôlle and the Lytse Wiid, is a valuable natural area. Originally, it was a marshy wilderness. It transformed when peat diggers from Giethoorn extracted peat here.
The Nannewiid is one of the few remaining peat lakes. In addition to open water, you'll find reed beds, fen woodlands, and reed fields. On the western side, various plants such as marsh violets, cotton grass, and the Spanish rider thrive in the peat moss. The diverse habitat attracts a variety of birds for breeding, including the marsh harrier and hawk, as well as the golden oriole, grasshopper warbler, reed warbler, and even the nightingale. Additionally, numerous fish species inhabit the waters.
The Nannewiid is part of the Frisian Lakes.
