The circular graveyard in the little village of Scharl sits on a natural mound. The wooden bell tower in the graveyard was built in 1898. Beneath its four-sided metal dome roof there is a single bell. The bell tower we see today may have replaced an earlier version with a saddle roof. The two boulders next to the bell tower are glacial erratics that once served as foundations.
The current bell was cast in 1903 and came from Stavoren, where it was used to sound a fog signal. The bell it replaced was cast by Henrick Wegewart in Kampen in 1597, which went missing during the Second World War.
The Dutch inscription on the bell translates as: CAST BY THE GEBR. VAN BERGEN MIDWOLDA IN 1903
The inscription around the top of the bell reads: PRESENTED BY THE KOUDUM VILLAGE COUNCIL AND VILLAGERS ASSOCIATION IN 1947
