The lettering on the decorative pediment over the door says ‘Mr Gritman Hobbe van Baerdt 1644'. On 18 March of that year, he laid the first stone of a church with a nave and side aisle that was built to replace the 16th-century church that once stood on this site. In 1939, the church was destroyed by a fire. The Second World War delayed the rebuilding of the church until 1947.
