Workumerwaard

Along the IJsselmeer coast, near Workum, nature reserve the Workumerwaard is situated.

Buismanskoai and Dyksfearten Nature Reserves

The old sea dike on the shore of Lake IJsselmeer runs through spectacular natural scenery. The Dyksfearten are a series of waterways that run parallel to the road. Today they serve mainly as ecological connecting zones.

Sondeler Leien Nature Reserve

The Sondeler Leien nature reserve is in Gaasterland. The small inland lake here probably formed when the waters of the former Zuiderzee broke through the dikes.

De Wolvetinte

De Wolvetinte is a beautiful nature reserve near Aent Lieuwespolder that provides ideal habitat for waders and several types of ducks. The quality of the habitat is preserved by the local bird protection agency Fûgelûntwyk It Heidenskip and its partners.

Workumermeerpolder

The Workumermeerpolder is a reclaimed land. The Workumer lake was drained in 1877 and is now a low-lying area of -3 meters NAP.

Oosterschar Nature Reserve

The Oosterschar (in Frisian Easterskar) nature reserve southwest of the town of Joure is a low peat-bog reserve. The landscape features here include old peat pits that were created by peat mining.

The Nannewiid

The Nannewiid, along with the Douwe Pôlle and the Lytse Wiid, is a valuable natural area. Originally, it was a marshy wilderness. It transformed when peat diggers from Giethoorn extracted peat here.

Jolderenbos

The Jolderenbos is one of the oldest forests of Gaasterland. The first trees were planted here more than 300 years ago!

Zwettepoel Recreational Lake

Zwettepoel (in Frisian Swettepoel) is an idyllic recreational lake between the villages of Broek and Goingarijp in the Lage Midden or ‘low midlands’ area of Friesland. At one time the lake was connected to the Broekstervaart and Noorder Oudeweg waterways.

Gaasterland Forests

Gaasterland is a patchwork landscape of low hills (gaasten), cliffs and magnificent forests. Including the Rijsterbos forest, which grows down to the edge of Lake IJsselmeer. This is a wonderful area for walking, cycling, horse riding and mountain biking.

Vegelinbossen Forests

The Vegelinbossen forests were planted on the sand ridge on which the village of St Nicolaasga sits. Mayor Johan Vegilin van Claerbergen arranged for the forests to be planted in 1722. Today this is a beautiful place to go walking, cycling, horse riding.

Aeltsjemeerpolder

The Aeltsjemeerpolder is an area of peatland near the town of Workum that was reclaimed from a lake in 1877.

Mirnserklif

If you set off from the Rijsterbos forest and walk in the direction of Lake IJsselmeer you will come to the cliff at Mirns. It is a place that attracts kite surfers, kite flyers and beach lovers. The cliff was formed during the last ice age but one.

Wyldemerk

The Wyldemerk is a nature reserve with an idyllic lake. It is connected to the Slotermeer and the Fluessen.

Rode Klif (Red Cliff) at Lake IJsselmeer

At the edge of Lake IJsselmeer there is a red cliff that is 10 metres high. It was formed during the last ice age but one when the land was pushed up by glaciers that advanced from Scandinavia. The forces exerted by the ice created hills in the landscape.
