Skriezekrite Idzega is a peat meadow area covering approximately 1,800 hectares located between the villages of Gaastmeer, Oudega SWF, and Heeg, where farmers take into account meadow birds such as godwits, lapwings, and oystercatchers. Each spring, around 350 pairs of godwits nest in this area, along with many other birds.

Frisian Mosaic
The area is called a mosaic because it consists of various pieces of land managed in different ways. Together, they form a patchwork that helps meadow birds through every stage of the breeding process. Some fields belong to conventional farmers who mow later, allowing chicks to hide in the tall grass, while other fields are designated as herb-rich grassland or wet areas so that birds can find food.

Agricultural Collective
Some fields are owned by Staatsbosbeheer, such as 'De Pine' on the edge of the Idzegaaster poelen. However, the vast majority of the land is owned by local farmers, who use the land more or less intensively for their operations. Fortunately, 80% of the farmers in the Skriezekrite Idzega area participate in the agricultural collective Súdwestkust. Under the umbrella of this collaboration, farmers work towards nature-inclusive agriculture, focusing on a sustainable landscape with rich biodiversity.

Hiking Route and Bird Watching Hut in Idzega
Near the hamlet of Idzega, you can take a walk along the polder dike towards De Rigedyk (the road between Oudega SWF and Heeg). Along the way, you'll find a wooden bird-watching post that you can climb to get a good view of the 'De Pinepolder'. The path along the polder dike is not paved, so wear boots in wet weather. Once you've reached De Rigedyk, you can cross the road to visit another bird-watching post on the Nijesylspaad (bike path between Oudega SWF and Nijezijl), right next to the railroad.

Dogs
Unfortunately, your four-legged friend is not welcome in this area, even when leashed.

Parking
You can park at the small parking lot on the left side of Rigedyk (opposite number 37) or at the Klokkenstoel in Idzega.
