Walking route birds and mummies

(21.6 km)

Walk through the Greidhoek and discover its history, protected meadow bird areas, and the centuries-old mummy cellar in Nicolaaskerk Wiuwert.

The name “Greidhoek” comes from the Frisian word “greide,” which means grassland on clay. This area was once the floor of an ancient sea. People built terpen and dikes to be able to live here. This allowed them to cultivate the fertile land. This is how the beautiful landscape of meadows and charming terp villages came into being.

In the Greidhoek, you can discover interesting stories about the Frisian dairy industry, protected areas for meadow birds, and there are great opportunities for cycling and walking.

Note: part of the route follows a footpath. Another part runs along a road (60 km/h and 80 km/h) with and without a bike lane.

Mummy Cellar Wiuwert
During this walking route, you not only pass through the beautiful Greidhoek and along meadows but also by the mummy cellar in Nicolaaskerk Wiuwert. In 1765, carpenters in Wiuwert discovered seven natural mummies in the church. These bodies remained well preserved in the cellar. Most decayed in later investigations, but four bodies remained intact: a fourteen-year-old girl, a woman, a man with a jaw abscess, and a goldsmith. The mystery surrounding these ancient mummies remains unsolved to this day.
