Wieuwerd is a mummy village in the northern part of Southwest Friesland.
Together with Britswerd, Wieuwerd (Frisian: Wiuwert) forms a twin village in the far north of the Southwest Friesland region. The village is situated in the heart of the Greidhoeke, where you can observe various bird species every year and in every season.
Wieuwerd, with its 300 residents, may be small, but it is well-known for the Mummy Crypt. This crypt was built beneath the Nicolaaskerk in 1609, and to this day, you can visit the ancient mummies. The surroundings of Wieuwerd, with numerous villages like Boazum or Mantgum, are perfect for exploration by bike or during a hiking tour.
