On December 22, 1942, the American B-24 bomber B24-445TH BG (Snow Goose) takes off from Tibenham, Norfolk, Britain to bomb a railway yard in Osnabrück.

Although the aircraft of the 700th Bombardment Squadron of the 445th Bombardment Group reached the target, it was unable to drop the bombs due to a technical defect. The crew returns to Tibenham Air Base, but is spotted and attacked by two patrolling German aircraft over Friesland.

A heavy dogfight ensued, in which one of the crew members was injured. Bombardier Second Lieutenant, Martin P. Bulger was parachuted over Bozum, but died after coming to the ground. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft was badly hit by German fire, causing it to crash near Bolsward, a short distance from the Witteveen family farm. The bombs were not dropped before landing and exploded during the crash. The entire crew was killed. After the war, the crew was reburied in the United States. To visit the monument, you have to walk a bit into the meadow.
