Drowned land of Elahuizen
Elahuizen
In the Fluessen, you will find a buoy marking where the village of Elahuizen used to be.
In the Fluessen, approximately 150 meters from the shore, you will find a black and yellow cardinal buoy. This buoy marks the spot where, before the flooding of 1680, the church of Elahuizen stood. With this flood, the entire village was swept away and drowned. The village now known as Elahuizen was formerly called Nijegea. However, because there were three Nijegeas in Friesland at the time and it was confusing for postal services, they renamed this village to Elahuizen.
