National Landscape Southwest Friesland
During this cycling tour, you will discover two of the landscape types that make National Landscape Southwest Friesland so special: the vast peat landscape and the charmingly undulating Gaasterland, where forests, meadows and water alternate. The route also takes you through several watersports villages and one of the eleven picturesque Frisian Eleven Cities.
We will save the coast with its cliffs and the clay area with its medieval dwelling mounds and dykes for another time.

National Landscape Southwest Friesland
During this cycling tour, you will discover two of the landscape types that make National Landscape Southwest Friesland so special: the vast peat landscape and the charmingly undulating Gaasterland, where forests, meadows and water alternate. The route also takes you through several watersports villages and one of the eleven picturesque Frisian Eleven Cities.
We will save the coast with its cliffs and the clay area with its medieval dwelling mounds and dykes for another time.
Starting from the TOP in Woudsend, you head east. This route is ridden counterclockwise, so after Woudsend, Heeg is your first stop. Next comes Oudega, after which you cycle through the low-lying agricultural countryside towards the ferry at Nijhuizum. Cross the water to Workum and then head south again via It Heidenskip.
From Koudum onwards, the landscape begins to gently undulate. You now know that you have arrived in Gaasterland. Continue cycling to Balk, the 'capital' of Gaasterland, and return to Woudsend via Lake De Fluezen.

Woudsend (Wâldsein)
Woudsend is a village nestled between Lake Heegermeer and Lake Slotermeer.
Wheat mill 't Lam
Mole 't Lam is the oldest wheatmill in Friesland and is located in Woudsend, where the miller and his wife grind grains and wheat into artisanal flour products and various bread mixes.
Hellingbrêge Woudsend
If you sail or drive through the beautiful center of Woudsend, you will undoubtedly come across the high Hellingbrêge.
Jeltesleat Akwadukt
When sailing through the Jeltesloot near Hommerts, you will eventually cross the N354, using the aqueduct through the Jeltesloot.
Ankertsjerke Oudega SWF
Central in the originally medieval water village of Oudega, you will find the Ankertsjerke. Situated on a small enclosed cemetery right along the east-west axis along which the village originated. A lush ivy adorns the south facade in a thick green coat.
Workum (Warkum)
Workum (or Warkum as we say in Friesland), is one of the famous Frisian cities that has enjoyed city rights since 1399. Located on the shores of the former Zuiderzee and bordering the Frisian lakes.
Koudum
Koudum is centrally located in Southwest Friesland. This makes it an ideal base for your next vacation.
Balk
Balk is a large village with many amenities in Southwest Friesland; it is the main town of Gaasterland and is situated along the Elfstedentocht route.
Belltower Ypecolsga
Ypecolsga is a hamlet near Woudsend. The double bellcote in Ypecolsga was completely replaced in 1956. Beneath the peculiar hipped roof hang 2 bells dating back to 1664.
