Clay region

The medieval influences can still be recognised in the clay region of Waterland van Friesland. Here you'll find raised terps to keep the houses high and dry (drûch hâlde), constructed by residents in the days when the silty seawater regularly flooded the countryside. Beautifully idyllic terp villages can still be found in the landscape. The connecting dikes built in the Middle Ages wind their way through the land. The clay region was always the wealthiest and most urbanised section of Southwest Friesland. Here you'll find the cities of Bolsward, Sneek, Workum, Hindeloopen and Stavoren.
