Houtstad IJlst is more than just a name. For centuries the town has been closely linked to wood and you can see and experience this everywhere. In IJlst the past comes alive: sawmill De Rat still cuts logs into planks, just like 300 years ago. The museum building, inspired by historical wooden construction, consists of nine solid cubes that together form one structure.
Wood through the centuries
From manual power to steam power, IJlst has been a centre of woodworking for centuries. In the Middle Ages wood was processed by hand. The invention of the crankshaft changed this. Thanks to this technique logs could be sawn using wind power. With the arrival of the steam engine the saw frame was no longer driven by wind but by steam and later by an electric motor. This development can be experienced up close in IJlst.
Sawing with the power of time
In IJlst you experience the full evolution of sawing wood. Sawmill De Rat still works as it did in the past. In the museum the traditional saw frame is powered alternately by steam or electricity. The hand powered saw also still has its place here, giving a unique view of centuries of craftsmanship.

Nooitgedagt: tools, skates and toys
In 1865 Jan Nooitgedagt started making planes and chisels. His company grew with his four sons into a business with more than 150 employees. In the museum you discover 150 years of product development. Nooitgedagt tools are still known for their quality. Duplicate items are for sale in the museum, giving a second life to durable craftsmanship.
Sustainably built and beautifully located
The museum building reflects traditional wooden architecture with a modern energy neutral design. From the building you have a great view of sawmill De Rat and the historic water route De Geeuw towards Sneek.
