Nowhere in the Netherlands you will find as much landscape variety as in Southwest Friesland, which is why it is a National Landscape. Start your expedition at visitor centre Mar en Klif, fun for both young and old.

Experience the story of the coast with cliffs, the clay area with medieval mounds and dikes, the five small Elfsteden towns, the wide farming landscape and the gently rolling Gaasterland where forest, meadows and water alternate. After your visit you will see and enjoy the outdoors in a new way.

Inside the visitor centre you will find many aspects of National Landscape Southwest Friesland. For children there are many activities throughout the exhibition. Filing wood, working with flint, crawling through an ice cave, a badger den and a hunter’s hut, moving underground between tree roots, analysing owl pellets from a real owl pellet machine, building “stinsen” and much more.

Adults can enjoy stories about old and new history. Here you learn to read the landscape. You see traces left by the ice age. You also learn how medieval people shaped the land with mounds, dikes and drainage systems. The exhibition also shows later history such as agriculture and nature development and the impact of conflicts including the Second World War.

Visitor centre Mar en Klif is a surprising and educational day out. Come and experience it yourself.
