It started as a small private initiative in 1983 and has grown into the largest skating museum in the world.
As a private museum it holds a complete collection about the history of the Elfstedentocht with a special Elfsteden hall that brings the stories and highlights of this legendary tour to life. The museum also has the largest collection of skates and sledges in the world. You will also find key information about short track skating. A unique highlight is the world’s largest skate measuring 6 metres and 11 centimetres as well as an amputated toe and special memorabilia from all Elfstedentocht winners.
Walking through the more than 500 square metre exhibition you are taken back in time. Old workshops smithies and varnish workshops give a unique look into the past while the development of the clap skate is also shown. Because of the large collection the exhibitions change regularly which makes every visit different. The Skating Museum is highly recommended for both young and old.
Hindeloopen painting tradition
In the museum shop you will find hand painted objects gifts and furniture in the typical Hindeloopen style which you can also buy. It is also possible to follow a workshop in Hindeloopen painting.
Restaurant De Friese Doorloper
