In 1765, carpenters working on wood carvings in the church accidentally discovered perfectly preserved bodies in the burial vault. It was the shock of their lives. They ran out of St. Nicholas Church in panic. Ever since, the burial vault, built in 1609 by the noble Walta family, has remained surrounded by mystery.

Are the people buried here only members of the Walta family, or could they also include members of the Labadists, a religious community that moved from Germany to the Walta Estate in Wieuwert in 1675? Could one of the four remaining mummies be Anna Maria van Schurman, the highly gifted scholar and the first woman to attend a university in Europe, who was also a member of the Labadists? And what happened to the seven other bodies that disappeared?

Another fascinating object is the centuries-old set of false teeth displayed in one of the museum cases. What is the story behind it? There are plenty of mysteries to discover, and during a guided tour of the church in Wieuwert, you will learn the answers to many of these intriguing questions.

Guided tours are available from April through October. Groups of 15 people or more are asked to book in advance. Admission is €4 per person. Children aged 6 to 12 pay €3, and children up to the age of 5 can enter free of charge.
