Take a look
A hemdijk is an inner dike that was constructed in the twelfth century to protect important agricultural areas in the Low Middle of Friesland from surging water.
These inner dikes are often located alongside the old Marne and Middelzee dikes, where they protected the farmlands from encroaching inland water. Due to the differences in elevation, the Hemdijken are still easily recognizable in the landscape. The combined Hemdijken now form a beautiful winding chain roughly between the Eleven Cities town of Bolsward and the village of Raerd.
