The Jacobikerk church stands on the terp in the village of Wommels. The single-nave church built in the 13th century was restored after a fire in around 1508. In the three-tier tower built in 1862 there are two bells. One was cast by Geert van Wou in 1494. The other was cast in 1611.
The pulpit, three funerary hatchments (Duco van Jongema, Franciscus van Jongema and Syts van Camminga) on the north wall and three hooded gentlemen’s benches, one of which was built for the Van Grovestins family in 1677, all date from the 17th century. The five 18th-century funerary hatchments in the choir depict the arms of the Van Sminia family. The organ was installed in 1847 by Pieter Jans Radersma (1803-1851), who built it with 17th-century pipes from an older organ. A fire broke out on New Year’s Day 1868. The organ was restored by Willem Hardorff.
Loosely translated, the words etched in stone above the side entrance to the churchyard say:
What happens here is righteous, here lies the lord next to the servant.
Here the poor lie next to the rich, the ugly next to the beautiful.
Here the farmer lies next to the nobleman, the scholar next to the incapable.
Here the fool lies next to the wise, the young next to the old.
But come closer and tell me, which one is rich, poor, beautiful or noble?
Here they all lie side by side. None considered more than another. Anno 1591.
