The fifth and final section of the Elfstatentocht Country Estate Route takes you to southwest Friesland where there are not as many country estates. The few that remain are situated in higher sandy areas, such as the rolling countryside of Gaasterland.
This part of the route is almost 85 kilometres. So prepare for a long bike ride and, ideally, spread it over two days, looping first to the east, then to the west. The Zuidwest Fryslân National Landscape conservation area is a wonderful place to go cycling. You can stop to admire the Frisian lakes you pass along the way, cross the water on a ferry and enjoy views of Lake IJsselmeer.

8521 NC Sint Nicolaasga
Huize Boschoord
Landhuis uit 1871 van Jonkheer van Eysinga met achter het huis de Vegelinbossen waar je prachtig kunt wandelen.
Vegelinbossen Forests
The Vegelinbossen forests were planted on the sand ridge on which the village of St Nicolaasga sits. Mayor Johan Vegilin van Claerbergen arranged for the forests to be planted in 1722. Today this is a beautiful place to go walking, cycling, horse riding.
Hobbe van Baerdt Church in Joure
This church is named after Hobbe van Baerdt, who, as ‘grietman’ (a kind of mayor), presided over the former municipality of Haskerland from 1615 to 1650. The lettering on the decorative pediment over the door says ‘Mr Gritman Hobbe van Baerdt 1644'.
Broek Bell Tower
In the slightly raised waterside graveyard in Broek there is a white wooden bell tower with a four-sided dome roof. The swinging bell was cast by Hendrik Wegewaert in 1600.
