Wommels Roaming Route
Wommels is the starting point of this 11-kilometre Roaming Route through the open landscape of Friesland. The village was originally built on a mound. Over the years it has become the central hub of the area.
The route starts near a monumental cheese warehouse. Today it houses the It Tsiispakhús museum, which documents the history of the dairy industry in the region. As you pass the Jacobikerk church, take a moment to step inside. This ornately decorated Late Gothic church is well worth seeing.

The village is one of the main places where Frisian handball is played. The annual Freulepartij handball tournament for boys aged 14 to 16 held here is named after Freule de Vos van Steenwijk, the woman who founded and funded the event. The tournament attracts thousands of handball enthusiasts to Wommels every year. At Junction 20 you stray off the route briefly to visit a bird-watching hide, where you may see some of the many meadow birds that live in this area. The route leads you across meadows and through the Skrok nature reserve. Along the way you pass the beautiful Aylvapoldermolen smock mill. The original mill burnt to the ground in 1959. In 2000, the Vijfhuistermill smock mill from in Hallum was rebuilt on this site. When you arrive back in Wommels, take some time to discover this charming little village.
